National Highways are carrying out essential repairs to the Welford viaduct which takes the M4 over Rood Hill and the river Lambourn near Easton to keep the structure safe and secure.
They will be doing some concrete repairs, replacing the bridge joints, waterproofing and upgrading the safety barrier.
During this time, there will be temporary traffic lights underneath the viaduct on Rood Hill. They will also need to close the road underneath the motorway for a few nights at the start and end of the programme to carry out some pre-work checks.
Closure information
- Rood Hill will be closed from Easton Hill to just the other side of the M4 on Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 October 2023. Residential access will be maintained. After that, there will be 3-way temporary traffic lights for the duration of the work.
- The M4 will be closed eastbound overnight (9pm-6am) between junction 14 and 13 on Saturday 4, Sunday 5 and Monday 6 November 2023.
- The M4 will be closed westbound overnight (9pm-6am) between junction 13 and 14 on Tuesday 7, Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 November 2023.
Diversion information
- When Rood Hill is closed, drivers will be diverted via A338, B4000 through Wickham and High Street.
- When the motorway is closed, a fully signed diversion will be in place in both directions via A34, A4 Bath Road and A338
